What is STEM?
Science, technology, engineering, and math are cool! That is the goal of STEM education—getting students interested in these areas of study instead of becoming shy or anxious. Kids gain an understanding of intriguing life, earth, and physical science topics while learning critical and creative problem solving-skills.
About Smart Start: STEM
With the Smart Start: STEM Kindergarten activity book from Evan-Moor, kindergarteners get introduced to these vital concepts early through fun, engaging stories, activities, and journal writing challenges they complete with their parents. Because these skills are important in other academic areas, this Smart Start: STEM activity book is a helpful stepping stone for young learners.
Engage your child in fun hands-on projects that develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The STEM challenges and activities encourage your child to think creatively and explore different ideas to solve problems. Parents act as facilitators, guiding their children through the problem-solving process.
Each unit includes stories and practice pages that help children understand science concepts and provide a foundation for completing each STEM challenge. A STEM journal activity helps guide children through the engineering design process: plan, create, test, and record.
Topics within each STEM challenge target earth, life, and physical science. Each unit covers a specific scientific concept and includes:
- Science Story: Introduces each science concept
- Practice Activities: Support children’s understanding
- STEM Story: Fictional story with a problem to solve
- STEM Challenge: Hands-on activity to solve a problem
- STEM Journal: Provides a planning outline to help complete the challenge activity

Smart Start: STEM K Book in Action
As you may remember, I taught two young children in my home recently. I am still close with their family and they gladly offered to review this book for us so we could get a peek inside and some opinions from the target age group! AK and Ki are finishing up homeschool Kindergarten and their big sister CC is finishing up 2nd grade at home. This book is targeted towards Kindergarteners but their older sister got in on the action also and helped facilitate many of the activities.
After the first day with the book, their mom sent me this text:
“The kids said this was amazing! AK enjoyed the matching pages a lot, Ki liked the building. It hit on a lot of areas which I loved. We really enjoyed this and even little Ellie got in on the action!”
Ellie is their little sister, shown below, having fun with the STEM activity!
The smiles tell all! Obviously, this book was fun for them and they have thoroughly enjoyed the projects and lessons so far. I knew they would and imagine most kids would! I highly recommend this book!
