Teaching Spelling

(Freebie included… Ends August 6, 21)

There is more than one method to teaching spelling. Because all kids are different, trying different methods can be very helpful.

We have tried so many programs.

  1. Phonetic Zoo by Pudewa
  2. Megawords
  3. Spelling lists
  4. Copywork
  5. Some type of spelling via a computer program. Can’t remember the title.

These are the ones I remember.

I have primarily relied on three methods:

  • Copywork …..We never stopped copywork. It’s not the most efficient manner to teach spelling, but it is the most consistent approach.
  • Megawords…I love this curriculum. It really should be part of a phonics curriculum. After phonics, my kids went straight to reading all the time. My older two kids had really bad spelling, and I think it’s because I didn’t teach them syllabication. Syllabication is the focus of Megawords. After I learned about Megawords, I reviewed syllabication with my older kids. Then I put them in Megawords while continuing copywork.
  • Word list ….We used Spectrum, and other books with spelling lists on occasion. Sometimes I created the word list from their missed dictation words. (That’s really how it should be done, right?) These are really helpful because they reinforce correct spelling words that children should know based on grade. (Sort of, everything is up for negation when discussing grades.) These lists often include everyday words related to our environment. Because we rely so heavily on copywork, these books are nice additions because they guarantee that certain words are not missed.

Anyway, after my kids were beyond spelling list (studying vocabulary words instead), I made a spelling curriculum.

Today, I’m giving away a free copy of the the level 1 Spelling Workbook.

Let me know what you think.

By the way, the purpose of this article is to say: You don’t have to rely on one method to teach spelling. Mix it up. Try different things. Children are so different. What works for one probably won’t work for all of them. And it’s okay to use more than one approach simultaneously.

Take care,
