We Try Five Scissor Skill Workbooks

Scissor skill workbooks worksheets at How we Montessori preschool book cutting pasting

I recently noticed that scissor skill workbooks are popular among How we Montessori readers. I love to use scissor practice worksheets but usually, I download them from Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers. I also like to give my preschooler catalogues from sports stores or gardening stores and allow him to cut out the images as he likes.

There are benefits to using scissor skill workbooks like these. The workbooks allow us to have lots of images on hand, we never know if the child will use one page or ten, or more. Workbooks may offer variety and often have images for a range of skill levels.

If you are looking for some scissors, from around three years we use the Staedtler Noris Club Children Scissors (our review of 10 children's scissors is here).

1. Melissa & Doug Sea Life Scissor Skills Activity Pad

We love this scissor skills activity pad and would absolutely recommend it. I'm now eager to try other Melissa & Doug Scissor Skills Activity Pads. The activities are interesting, there is a ton of variety and the pages are super easy to tear off and give to the child.

  • Easy to tear out pages.
  • Colourful interesting images.
  • Lots of variety including cutting activities with straight and curved lines.
  • Cutting and pasting activities.
  • Includes a pair of scissors (not pictured).
  • Includes 20 sheets.

This submarine is a good example of a cut and paste activity.

The child cuts out the people, then pastes the people in the portholes.

My child (4yrs) struggles and often gets annoyed when cutting images out from a large sheet of paper, sometimes I cut out the images like this (above) which makes it easier for him. I've provided the glass bowl for the paper scraps. The smaller images/pieces can be pasted together to make a whole turtle.

Straight lines are easier for young children or early learnings to start with. It takes a lot of skill for the young child to learn to cut on the line.

4. Melissa & Doug Tape Activity Book

This isn't specifically a scissor activity book but it makes sense for the child to cut the tape with scissors. The child can choose a page and apply the tape to the white rectangular spots or apply it wherever they like!

  • Four rolls of tape included.
  • Pages are thick and coated - reusable, can be re-used many times.
  • Spiral-bound - easy to flip through the images.
  • 20 reusable scenes/pages.
  • Simple cutting of tape - useful for children who may not like more complex scissor activities.
  • Engaging - many children like cutting and using tape.

This is fantastic for visual discrimination. The child can cut the tape to the size of the white spots on the sheets.
