The number of days to spend in Arenal really depends on your interests and schedule. For those who want to do some of the main activities, such as visiting hot springs, hiking, and exploring the town of La Fortuna, a minimum of two to three days is recommended. However, if you also want to explore other areas around Arenal, such as the Venado Caves or take a white-water rafting trip, you may want to plan for four to five days in the area. Ultimately, the length of your stay will depend on your personal preferences and the activities you want to do.

How to Get to Arenal and La Fortuna from San Jose?
Rental Car
If you want the most flexibility during your Costa Rican vacation, renting a car is the best way to go. I recommend picking up a 4×4 since some of the roads getting into popular destinations like Monteverde are rough and bumpy.
Hotel-to-Hotel Shuttle
If you’d rather not drive yourself, there’s a great network of hotel-to-hotel shuttles. You can pick a private shuttle or shared for a more economical ride. With private shuttles you can determine your departure time, which shared vans operate on set times. I loved this option on my first trip to Costa Rica because they picked me up and dropped me off right at my accommodations.
Between San Jose and Arenal you can go with Interbus, Tropical Tours Shuttle, or Zuma Tours.
Public Transit
If you’re looking for the most affordable way to get to La Fortuna from San Jose, you’ll want to hop on a public bus. Tickets need to be purchased in person at the bus terminal so be sure to get there well before the departure time to make sure you get a seat. Compared to the $50+ you’ll pay for a hotel-to-hotel shuttle, you can expect to pay as little as $5 for a city to city bus ticket.
Buses are not government owned and are all privately owned businesses so you’ll need to research which bus company goes to which destination. From San Jose to Arenal you can take Transportes San Carlos (contraloriadrservicios.buses@gmail.com – +506 8356 1555) 3 times/day for approximately $7 and the journey takes about 3.5 hours.
