We all know and love canned tuna, especially Ayam Brand’s! But have you heard of canned Saba fish? Saba is the Japanese term for the Pacific Mackerel fish and Ayam Brand now has a Saba line! While canned mackerel isn’t popular in Southeast Asia, it is a common canned food in other parts of the world, and it is time we caught up. Hence, here are 3 awesome canned Saba fish recipes or canned mackerel recipes for you to try!
Breakfast: Saba Fish Breakfast Cups
Lunch: Cheesy Saba Fish Tamagoyaki
Dinner: Spicy Saba Fish Baked Rice
Ayam Brand Saba
Ayam Brand is well beloved in Singapore for their canned tuna line and other canned fish products. That is why we are so excited for their Ayam Brand Saba line which is made in the same three flavours as the tuna!
They have:
- Saba Mackerel Flakes in Mayonnaise
- Saba Mackerel Flakes in Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Saba Flakes in Chilli
Another reason for our excitement over the Saba line is because the Saba fish is full of health benefits.
With 50% more Omega 3 than the tuna line, the Ayam Brand Saba line is better in helping to strengthen bones, improve eyesight, and it is good for the brain.
So, if you are studying hard for a test or have a huge project coming up at work, this is a great choice for you!
But first, let us show you how some Saba fish recipes.
Saba Fish Breakfast Cups
Breakfast cups are perfect for quick breakfasts or if you are into meal prepping. Packed with the major food groups of carbohydrates, protein, and vegetables, it is a great way to fuel your day!
All you need to do is prepare a huge batch, store them in the fridge and grab one or two in the morning.
For this dish, we are using Ayam Brand’s Saba Flakes in Mayonnaise as it’s creaminess will go perfectly with the puff pastry.
The fish flakes are very tender and fine to mix well with the mayonnaise for that beautiful creamy texture. And as the mayonnaise recipe is the same as their tuna mayo, the flavour is quite similar. But of course, the Saba Flakes is way healthier, so it is a better choice!
For the first step, we are going to prepare and bake the pastry.
Start by preheating your oven to 180°C before rolling out the dough.
Dust your worktop and rolling pin with some flour and lay the pastry dough on top and roll it out to a 3mm thickness. We are using store bough pastry dough, but you can make your own from scratch if you like.
Once the pastry is ready, cut it into half and lay one half on top of the other. This will help to give the breakfast cups some volume.
To shape the cups, use a cup or a circular mould to cut out circles from the dough. The size of the circles will determine how big the breakfast cups are, so you can choose your desired size.
Place the circles in a lined muffin or baking tray and brush them with egg wash before putting them to bake for 20 minutes.
While the puff pastry is baking, you can go ahead and mix the Saba fish filling.
Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well to combine then set aside.
When the pastry is ready, allow it to cool down before handling it. Using a small knife, carefully cut a circle in the middle of each pastry.
Then, use your finger to press down on the circle to create a well and fill it up with the filling. Garnish with coriander and your Saba fish breakfast cups are done!
These breakfast cups are really filling and delightful to have. Crisp puff pastry against the creamy tang of the Saba fish filling, it is tempting to have more than one!
You can also customise this recipe to add your favourite vegetables like celery instead of carrots for the filling. Or even top it off with some cheese!
Let us move on to a different cuisine for lunch.
Cheesy Saba Fish Tamagoyaki
One of the popular Japanese side dishes is Tamagoyaki- a rolled egg eaten with dashi and soy sauce. This side dish is easy to make and you can add almost any ingredient to it!
Today, we are adding more protein to the Tamagoyaki for a hearty lunch.
With Ayam Brand’s Saba Flakes in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, you can get fresh chunks of mackerel fish.
The extra virgin olive oil is 100% natural and high in vitamins A, D, E, and K. You can even use it for salad dressings! Otherwise, just drain away the oil and the tender flaky fish is ready for use.
Start by preparing the eggs.
Add the salt, pepper, and spring onions to the eggs. Beat well to mix.
Heat some oil in a pan on low heat and pour in half of the eggs. Let it cook until the bottom is firm then lay a slice of cheese and the Saba fish flakes on top. When the eggs are almost cooked but still a little runny on top, carefully lift one end over and roll the egg up.
Bring the rolled egg down to the bottom of the pan. Add more oil if you need it then pour the rest of the eggs. Lay the cheese and Saba fish flakes on top and roll the egg up again and you are done!
To serve, slice the Tamagoyaki into even pieces. You can also prepare a dipping sauce of dashi and soy sauce or eat it as it is.
The Tamagoyaki is very springy and full of cheese which goes well with the flavour of the mackerel flakes.
All you need is just a bowl of rice and you have a simple but elegant, protein-filled lunch!
Last, but certainly not the least- dinner!
Spicy Saba Fish Baked Rice
Baked rice is the ultimate dinner for anyone who loves cheese. It is a great comfort meal to soothe and warm both your tummy and soul with its yummy deliciousness!
It is also a quick dish that you can whip up anytime or your favourite ingredients to. How great is that?
Learning from the tricks of the best mac and cheese dishes, we are elevating the humbled baked rice with a spicy kick.
Ayam Brand’s Saba Flakes in Chili acts as two ingredients in one for this dish- the protein and the chili spice! The spice level is the same as their chili tuna’s, but not to worry. Dairy products like the cheese and milk used in this recipe will tone down the heat some.
Otherwise, the Saba fish flakes are nice and chunky, so you will get a good bite of meat for every spoonful. To make the dish spicer, you can add fresh Saba flakes straight from the can after cooking!
The first step is to prepare the sauce and rice.
Melt the butter in a pan and add the onions, carrots, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are soft before adding the flour. Stir it in until smooth.
Now gradually add the milk to the pan and keep stirring until the sauce has thickened. This makes a basic, rich Béchamel sauce that is used for many pasta and baked rice dishes!
Add half the cheese to thicken the sauce further before stirring in the Saba fish and cooked rice.
When the rice mixture is well mixed, we can prepare it for baking.
Preheat your oven to 200°C and grease a baking dish with butter or cooking oil.
To make the baked rice hearty and rice, we are going to layer it with two layers of rice mixture and cheese. Fill half of the baking dish with layer of the rice mixture, then top it up with half of the remaining cheese. Repeat another layer of rice mixture then add the remaining cheese.
Ensure the that the top is completely covered with cheese for that beautiful cheese crust.
Place the baked rice in the oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese is brown and bubbling at the edges.
The baked rice is very flavourful, and the spice of the Saba chili makes it more appetizing.
Rich, creamy, and hearty, we feel like we have been transported to an expensive Italian restaurant! Garnish with some coriander or parsley for a pop of green and your dinner is served.
