Camping is a great outdoor vacation idea during this pandemic that can get you out of the house without needing to be in a crowded space. One of the best things about camping is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. Will you sleep in an RV or under the stars? Will you camp alone, with a romantic partner at a glamping site, or with the family? Camping is a totally customizable experience! Without further ado, check out the tips below to make your camping trip the best it can be.
Bring Plenty of Food
Have you ever watched a movie or a TV show where one member of the camping party purposefully doesn’t pack food because they have big plans to fish and forage for their dinner? Well, that hardly ever goes as planned, right? This is just one of the reasons why it is so important to pack enough food for your trip. So, make sure to bring enough food for all of your meals. Don’t forget the s’mores supplies too!
Along with packing enough food, you need to make sure that the food is kept in a safe place. If you are packing meat or other perishables, make sure to put it in a cooler that is stocked with plenty of ice. You don’t need to be as careful with non-perishables. Also, when you go to sleep, make sure the food is secured and put somewhere that animals cannot get to. Putting leftovers in your car or RV is one of the best ways to keep animals from catching onto its scent and trying to get at it.
Don’t Forget a Swimsuit
Many campgrounds are situated on or near a beach. It would be a shame to be so close to water and not have a swimsuit with you! While you always could swim in your regular clothes, they would take much longer to dry and lake water and sometimes mess up clothes or irritate your skin if you wear the wet clothes for too long.
When it comes to camping, it doesn’t really matter what kind of swimwear you bring with you, so long as it is functional. If you haven’t gone swimming yet this year, you may want to try on your suit before you go to the beach. The last thing you want is a swimsuit that is too tight or too loose. Plus, if you do this ahead of time, you can have time to buy a new suit if need be. Oh! Remember to pack a towel too!
Keep Bugs at Bay
Nothing ruins a camping trip faster than a million little mosquito bites irritating your skin. Make sure that you pack bug spray. Apply this liberally as often as directed on the packaging. If you aren’t one for using bug spray, there are a few other things you can try. You can buy specialized tiki torches that keep bug away. There are also certain essential oil mixes that mosquitos and other bugs find repulsive (but that smell nice to humans) that you can use to have an organic way to keep the bugs away from you.
Get Waterproof Matches
Unlike in the movies, it’s a lot harder to start a fire with two sticks and elbow grease than it looks. Sometimes you need a little help. Specifically, sometimes you need a little help from matches or a lighter. Always remember to pack these! When possible, invest in waterproof matches. If you cannot find waterproof matches, keep your matches in a waterproof container, like a plastic bag or Tupperware.
As for other fire-staring tips, it’s also a good idea to bring along some kindling. Dry wood will work best for keeping a fire going, but sometimes you will need some dry brush to get the fire started. Newspaper, birch bark, and dried leaves, grass, and pinecones can all be tossed into a fire pit to get a fire started or to keep one going.
Try to Relax
Whether you are camping a mile from home or states away, remember that your camping trip is supposed to be a relaxing and fun event. Use this time to reconnect with family, friends, or just yourself and nature. And… if you get bored, try out some cool camping activities to keep everyone engaged and excited. All in all, try to use this time to unwind and get away from it all. Leave your phone turned off and tune into nature. They call it the great outdoors for a reason, so try to have fun!
