Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another significant site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens. It was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds.
