Bag of Rice Project #500 -A visit to the John family

Admin

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the John family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Barrand Family , and this is the 500th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the John family in Effoi village which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the family they were sitting outside of their house, when we drove in they all stood up and gave us a warm welcome. When we told them what brought us to their house they didn’t believe their eyes and they jumped up for joy. The family lives in a one-bedroom apartment and the house is built with mud which is on the verge of collapsing, whenever it rains the compound is flooded. The family is blessed with 7 kids.

The John family uses the cheapest fuel to cook which is firewood, they are unable to afford fuel for cooking. The husband is a palm wine tapper, he does this to fend for the family. The wife is unemployed and she has an interest in selling fish in the nearby market but she does not have the funds to start up the business.

The family thanked the donor and were happy someone who doesn’t know them donated a bag of rice which is equivalent to the minimum wage in the country. They prayed that God would bless the donor and the work of their hand. They were full of joy until we left, and they continued praying for the donor.
