Happy December! Have you completed your holiday shopping yet? If not, I have some ideas.
This year, my 2022 Holiday Gift Guide is filled with books and calendars. I usually go to the NY NOW Lifestyle and Gift Show each summer and cull the aisles for great jewelry, housewares, beauty treatments and more to include in my annual gift guide. Sadly in August, I was sick with Covid and wasn’t able to attend.
That being the case, I decided to change things up for 2022 and focus on books and calendars. I’m sharing a collection of fab books from Hardie Grant Books. I went through their entire fall/winter catalog of new books and picked out a few favorites. Same for calendars. I worked with the PR team at Workman Publishing Co., Inc. to select 2023 calendars — all perfect for gift giving.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, be sure to read to the end, as I’m hosting a holiday gift giveaway. One lucky reader will win a book/calendar combo. See the Rafflecopter below on how to enter.

Books baby boomers will enjoy
The Hardie Grant fall/winter catalog was filled with interesting books on topics ranging from travel, cooking, decorating, crafting as well as pocket-size guides on every subject imaginable. Here are four of my favs:
Ultimate Road Trips USA & Canada: If you’re thinking of taking a road trip or know someone who is (like my boyfriend E and I want to do when he retires), then you’ll want to get or give a copy of travel writer Andrew Collin’s curated collection of the very best road trips in North America. I really like this book because it provides 32 amazing driving adventures with comprehensive directions, maps, when to go, must-see highlights, best places to eat and sleep for each trip. E and I decided we’re going to start on the east coast and aim to do our first road trip next June following Andrew’s Upstate New York 8 Day Excursion.
STYLE: The Art of Creating A Beautiful Home: For those who enjoy spending more time at home or are planning to downsize and need decorating ideas, this book is worth perusing. Interior designer and stylist Natalie Walton shows novices how to cultivate and express personal style and transform a home with confidence. From reimagining the bathroom to understanding the essential ingredients for a kitchen, Natalie demonstrates how to bring your authentic style into your home. Not ready to redecorate, then buy a copy and use it as a coffee table book to inspire.
Cut Flower Growing: While I love having fresh flowers in my house, I’m not a good gardener. I usually buy my flowers at Trader Joe’s. However, with British floral designer Marianne Slater’s “beginner’s guide to planning, planting and styling cut flowers,” I think I might be able to improve my skills. Marianne shows how to grow and design beautiful arrangements for any size space and have flowers inside whatever the season.
THE AMALFI COAST: A Collection of Italian Recipes: OMG, first off, I adore the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Secondly, this cookbook makes me want to book a flight right now. But since I can’t, I want to prepare every recipe that authors Katie & Giancarlo Caldesi have created. With a passion for Italian food, the couple teach Italian cooking in their Caldesi cooking schools in and around London. Antipasti, soups, bread & pizza, risottos, fish, poultry & meat, vegetables, desserts , cocktails and cheeses –the cookbook is an #italianfoodielovers dream. Only thing is you’ll have to convert the recipes to U.S. measurements as Hardie Grant is a British publisher — otherwise just stare at the mouthwatering pics and drool.
Calendars to help keep track of months, weeks and days
I’m one who likes a printed wall calendar in my kitchen. I keep my appointments on my iPhone however I also like to track activities on a printed calendar so I can see the entire week and month in one view. I like a calendar that has room to write multiple appointments on the same day. Workman Publishing Co. has an array of calendars for 2023 including wall, desk, and poster size options. You can purchase them at workman.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and select independent bookstores. Here are five that sparked my interest:
A Calendar of CALM: Being a yogi, I chose this wall calendar for my annual print. It features “inspirations for a tranquil life,” with dreamlike images of beaches and mountains, meditative quotes by wise sages like Rumi, and calmness practices to restore balance. Yep, this one’s a keeper.
The Beginning Is Now: The artist Lisa Congdon created this colorful magnetic calendar for 2023. It includes tear-off pages for each month and a magnetic backing so you can hang it on the fridge or in an office. Lisa’s whimsical illustrations and motivational phrases will brighten up any space.
Unforgettable Senior Moments for 2023: Since I’m turning 65 in the new year, this calendar is appropriate. The page-a-day calendar is based on the bestselling book of the same name with a year of quotes, jokes, and silly real-life senior moments making it a great gift for those 50+.
The New York Times Mini Crossword Page-A-Day Calendar 2023 is for those who, like me, enjoy small daily crossword puzzles. I’m a Times Mini fanatic — every morning I challenge myself to the crossword and smile when I fill in the squares in record time. The crossword puzzles in this desktop calendar are based on the full-size daily Times puzzles and offer as they say “a workout for the brain.” No worries if you can’t get an answer, solutions are printed on the reverse side.
365 Days in Italy Picture-A-Day Calendar makes a fantastic gift for people who love Italy and all things Italian (me, me, me). Imagine spending 2023 in Italy immersing yourself in Italy’s wonders without leaving home? Each month is a tour of a distinctive region, with photographs, maps, and text packed with highlights, history, and traveler’s tips from travel writer Patricia Schulz.
Note that workman.com has 15% off site-wide with code WINTER22. Last day for holiday shipping is 12/13.
