New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan pays homage to Jules Verne in his exciting modern take on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a five-year high school that graduates the best marine scientists, naval warriors, navigators, and underwater explorers in the world. Ana's parents died while on a scientific expedition two years ago, and the only family's she's got left is her older brother, Dev, also a student at HP. Ana's freshman year culminates with the class's weekend trial at sea, the details of which have been kept secret. She only hopes she has what it'll take to succeed. All her worries are blown out of the water when, on the bus ride to the ship, Ana and her schoolmates witness a terrible tragedy that will change the trajectory of their lives.
But wait, there's more. The professor accompanying them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and Harding-Pencroft have been fighting a cold war for a hundred and fifty years. Now that cold war has been turned up to a full broil, and the freshman are in danger of becoming fish food. In a race against deadly enemies, Ana will make amazing friends and astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.
Daughter of the Deep is a middle grade/young adult fantasy by Rick Riordan. I am such a huge fan of Rick Riordan’s books, so when I heard he was coming out with a new story (and maybe…I hope!…series) I was so pumped! And I have to say Ana Dakkar and the entire Harding-Pencroft Academy blew. me. away! Daughter of the Deep was an incredible read, and I am so hoping we get more. I want at least 3 more books in this series because I am now obsessed with all things Captain Nemo and Nautilus related. Readers of all ages need to read Daughter of the Deep, because this is a delight of a book. It is one of my favorite reads of 2021!
In Daughter of the Deep, we meet out 15 year old heroine, Ana Dakkar, who is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, which is a very exclusive school centered around all things sea related. Graduates of Harding-Pencroft Academy go on to serve high powered positions all over the world, but Ana is just focused on passing her mysterious freshman trials. However, on the way to trials, something crazy and tragic happens with the school, which sets the freshman class off on another track. A course filled with creatures straight out of Jules Verne’s imagination…or is it all his imagination?
Daughter of the Deep is a fantastical read filled with awesome sea creatures, cutting edge tech and plenty of secrets, twists and turns. I loved Ana and the whole gang, especially Socrates the dolphin. This book took me on a journey I was completely and totally engrossed in. I couldn’t put this book down and I didn’t want it to end. Prepare to be submerged in the world of Daughter of the Deep, and be prepared to love every minute of it. Please let this be the start to a very long series Mr. Riordan!
