(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know).
While it's true that "The Walking Dead" has officially wrapped up its 11-season run on AMC, the universe is, in many ways, just beginning. The network had already expanded the franchise with the long-running "Fear the Walking Dead," as well as the relatively short-lived "Walking Dead: World Beyond." So, what's next for the zombie-filled universe? A brand new spin-off that will feature a couple of returning favorites for a brand new adventure. This time, in the Big Apple!
Originally announced as "Isle of the Dead," AMC's next show based on the Image Comics series by Robert Kirkman is titled "Dead City" and will see the return of both Maggie and Negan. Yes, Maggie has a lot of beef with Negan, given that he killed Glenn in brutal fashion in a major turning point in the main series. But that was a long time ago and they've got bigger fish to fry in the big city. With the show coming our way in 2023, we're here to break down everything we know so far so that fans can be ready when the time comes. Let's dig in.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Release Date And Where You Can Watch It
As of this writing, no precise release date for the series has been revealed. However, AMC has confirmed that the show is intended to premiere in June 2023. So that gives viewers a rough expectation on that front. Once the show starts, it won't be a particularly long ride, as the first season is set to consist of just six episodes. Whether or not it will extend beyond that single season remains to be seen.
What Is The Walking Dead: Dead City?
This is the latest spin-off set within "The Walking Dead" universe, and one that will pick up after the events of the main show's series finale. The big hook is that the action will be moving to New York City. Viewers will surely recall, the bulk of the action on "The Walking Dead" took place in and around Atlanta. But what exactly was going on in one of the most bustling cities in the world? One assumes, nothing good.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Director, Crew, And More
Eli Jorné is serving as showrunner and executive producer of the series. Jorné previously served as a writer and co-executive producer on the main series for several seasons. In addition to their starring roles, both Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will also serve as executive producers on the series. So they will have a larger hand in guiding the creative direction of the spin-off. Scott M. Gimple, who overseas the "Walking Dead" universe for AMC, is also on board as a producer.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Cast
The big hook of this show is that Lauren Cohan will reprise her role as Maggie, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be back as Negan. The pair will lead the series as an unlikely duo, given their checkered history with one another (to put it lightly). Additionally, Gaius Charles ("Friday Night Lights") is set to star alongside them in the spin-off. Zeljko Ivanek ("Damages"), Karina Ortiz ("The Long Road Home"), Jonathan Higginbotham ("The Blacklist"), and Mahina Napoleon ("NCIS: Hawaii") round out the ensemble.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Trailer And Synopsis
While we are sure to get another trailer or two before the show actually debuts, we do have the above teaser trailer for the series for you to check out. Aside from that, we have the official synopsis for the series as well, which you can read below:
['Dead City'] envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.
