Yes, it’s right bang middle of June and we’re going on about eating a hot bowl of laksa. But in a week, we’ve gone from “suns out, halal buns out” to sweater weather with the windy, rainy days. So take out your umbrellas and raincoats and head to one of these places that sell a warm, comforting laksa.
If you not familiar with what laksa is, laksa is a spicy noodle soup that originates from the Peranakan culture that is found in South East Asia. It takes influence from Malaysian, Chinese Straits and Indonesia.
There are two types of laksa that you’ll find on a menu – curry laksa and assam laksa.
Curry laksa is a noodle soup made with a creamy and spicy coconut base and comes fully loaded with rice noodles (or egg noodles), fish balls, tofu puffs, chicken and prawns too.
Assam laksa, on the other hand, contains no coconut milk and is made with a tamarind, fish and torch ginger flower base. It is considerably lighter and punchier.
That’s enough of a laksa lesson for you all. Here are some places in London that are offering halal laksa!
Halal Laksa in London
Normah’s, Queensway
A hidden gem, literally, Normah’s can be found tucked away in the back of Queensway Market and is run by an aunty and nephew duo. The laksa is perfect combination of creamy, spicy, and wholesome. Aunty Normah makes her sambal belacan from scratch meaning there won’t be any overwhelming fishy flavour in her laksa. You are able to choose either the prawn or chicken laksa – both are just as good as each other. Opt for the assam pedas (fish in a hot and sour curry) and roti to make it a complete meal.

Roti King, Euston
You may only know Roti King for their roti – I mean, they are pretty good – but they also serve a range of Malaysian dishes on their menu like rendang, murtabak and char kuey teow. And given the nature of this post, they also sell kari laksa – creamy coconut soup with noodles and seafood and chicken.

Satay House, Paddington
Satay house is a classic establishment that has been around for 30 years and one of their popular items is, you’ve guessed it, the kari laksa. Theirs is a creamy, coconut based soup with a generous sprinkling of chillies to make your brow glisten as you slurp away. You’ll also find an assortment of fried tofu puffs, noodles (egg or rice), eggs, and pieces of chicken and prawns, hidden inside the vibrant orange soup. Although, just be wary, the shrimp paste in the laksa can be a little overpowering sometimes.

Tukdin is a family run Malaysian restaurant that you can find on Craven road in Paddington. They have been around for a good decade and maybe even longer and have been churning out some great dishes like their skewer-free chicken satay, ikan kari (fish curry) and the ayam goreng bawang putih (garlic fried chicken). They also happen to do a curry laksa with chicken, egg and noodles!

Dapur, Holborn
Sharizah Hashim opened up Dapur in Holborn as a place to share recipes that had been passed down to her by the generations before. You’ll find them tucked away in a Holborn alley serving up some of the best and authentic Malaysian food in London with a menu that rotates weekly. Their curry laksa is a classic with all the trimmings: fish balls, tofu puffs, green beans, chicken and stuffed chillies. They also use their own homemade chilli sambal in their laksas.

Laksamania, Fitzrovia
Using a broth made from chicken bones being stewed for 8 hours, the laksa is rich and a flavour bomb in every slurp. Whilst the creamy singapore curry laksa with chicken here is great, the melaka curry laksa is what you need to order. A hot and sour soup with a generous amount of sambal belacan cooked into the base, and topped with fish balls, giant juicy prawns, shredded eggs, huge pillowy tofu puffs, and plenty of noodles too. The food here is consistently great and one of our favourite places for a laksa.

Their Singaporean laksa is made with a light coconut curry broth and topped with rice noodles, prawns, tofu and boiled egg.

Sambal Shiok, Holloway
Sambal Shiok, run by Mandy Yin, has had raving reviews from both critics and diners from the moment they opened. With the laksa being described as “pure joy” and “very, very good”, it is no wonder the restaurant is constantly busy every day of the week. You can start with the base laksa, choose your protein of poached chicken or juicy prawns or both, and add on any additional toppings like charred aubergine, potatoes, and even extra fried tofu. If you’re finding the laksa spicy, opt for an extra helping of cool coconut milk. The crispy Malaysian fried chicken is a good way to start the meal.
